Cage and his partner, Val Kilmer, come across a guy trapped in a jail cell with the flood waters rising. Cage jumps in to save him, and, in the process, severely injures his back. He’s returned to service. But the pain is so great, he turns to cocaine for relief.
This lieutenant a dedicated and decorated cop but, as far as he’s concerned: the end justifies the means, and he’ll do anything to solve murders, and score the drugs that keep him going. So, Cage manhandles old women in nursing homes, and makes a deal with a drug kingpin, played by Xzibit.
But the story isn’t important. Nicolas Cage is the pot of gold. All his quirkiness that you’ve come to love or hate, falls into place under the direction of the great Warner Zerzog. Cage gives a performance that approaches the psychotic. And, yet, you slowly come to understand that everything he does, is born of a single purpose. Eva Mendes plays his prostitute girlfriend, who helps peel back the layers of Cage’s personality.
