Even some of the strippers became nationally famous.

In the 1960s, the number of residents living in New Orleans declined for the first time in history, a trend that has continued throughout the following decades. The Claiborne Avenue overpass has been criticized for cutting other communities off from the French Quarter and the Central Business District, leaving the corridor below the interstate to wither. In recent years, proposals to close or demolish that section of the interstate, with the goal of revitalizing the area with more traffic on surface roads, have been put forward.
In Jefferson Parish, the interstate also has been blamed for the decline of Airline Drive, which used to serve as one of the main corridors to points west and north. In recent years, planners have struggled to revitalize that roadway to fight against the drugs and prostitution that replaced traveler- and family-oriented businesses that used to anchor the area.

Klaus Ortlieb, the owner of the newly renovated Hotel Modern in Lee Circle, is quick to point out that Bellocq, a collaboration with the Freret Street cocktail destination Cure, is not a hotel bar. The Hotel Modern already has a bar at Tamarind, its French-Vietnamese restaurant by Dominique Macquet. Two of the city’s top mixologists, Michael Glassberg and Kimberly Patton-Bragg, mix the drinks there. Bellocq, however, is a lounge.
“At home, you always have a living room where you listen to music and play games,” Ortlieb said. At Bellocq, however, the music will be monthly shows of international musicians booked by Lou Reed’s former manager.
Last year, Ortlieb approached Neal Bodenheimer and Kirk Estopinal of Cure with the idea for a lounge that harkens back to 19th-century New Orleans. The name is a tribute to E.J. Bellocq, who photographed the prostitutes of the Storyville district.

The legal system in Louisiana isn’t applied uniformly. Have you ever walked down Bourbon Street and have a, ahem, working lady come up to you and say, “Hey stranger,” and flash her breasts? In your face? While three or four cops are standing there watching? I personally haven’t but I believe today’s tale told by my local radio sports talk show host who said that happened to him the Thursday before the national championship game in the Big Easy.
If they’re arresting the Alabama guy why aren’t they arresting the woman who flashed him? Flashing breasts at an uninvited person in public in New Orleans may be advertisement but it’s also a crime, right? I’m pretty sure prostitution is illegal in Louisiana. I’m not saying she’s a prostitute but NOPD, do we have a double standard here?

… This was not a random act that happened between strangers. In this case, drugs were involved. Multiple guns were involved,” according to NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas. “And the perpetrators and victims we’ve identified all had previous records and some were certainly no strangers to the criminal justice system.”
Following the shootout with police, cops later found what they believe to be live hand grenades in the vehicle, leading to the evacuation of police headquarters for a time. Chief Ronal Serpas later described the grenades as “duds” which had no explosive components.
The NOPD describes the arrest records of the shooters and victims as the following:
Perpetrator 1: Jubbard Price. Currently on probation until 2014 for Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number, Illegal Discharging of a Weapon, Illegal Carrying of a Weapon, Unauthorized Use of a Moveable and Possession of Stolen Things.
Perpetrator 2: Andrea Price was previously arrested for Aggravated Battery and Prostitution.

Opened in December 2011, The Saint is poised to take advantage of its Mardi Gras proximity on Canal Street with 166 rooms in its eight stories. The hotel was designed for the historic Audubon Building on Canal Street with a $45 million renovation. As organic as the hotel already feels, this is the building’s first incarnation as a hotel. Owners D. Mark and Jana Wyant have achieved their concept of a nightclub that happens to be a 166-room boutique hotel with blue lights illuminating the hotel’s hallways. Downstairs, patrons can play a round of pool on the blue billiard table adjacent to the Burgundy Bar as a wall-sized Louis Armstrong photo beams down onto patrons in the bar’s bordello chic setting. Appropriate, given its proximity to early Storyville, New Orleans’ notorious red light district from 1895 to 1917. Oversized black and white photographic murals of early 20th Century New Orleans extend into the lobby, which was designed with no square walls, only curved surfaces and surprises around …

The space has continued to evolve over the last few weeks, and last night customers bellied up to a sleek new zinc bar top that was just installed Monday night. Also new is a large black-and-white painting of a reclining nude that takes up a far corner of the ceiling above the bar’s grand piano. The painting references the bar’s namesake, photographer E.J. Bellocq, famous for his turn-of-the-century photographs of Storyville prostitutes.
The bar’s menu has also been updated since our last visit. Instead of a one-page menu consisting almost entirely of cobblers—a precursor to the modern cocktail that features fortified wines like port or sherry and lots of crushed iced, which was a luxury in days before household refrigeration—the new menu is a bound booklet with a blue cover, a nod to the old “blue books” that served as a guide to New Orleans’ red light district.
