A Harvey man has been booked with prostitution after his alleged john overdosed on heroin in the motel room used for their tryst, according to Kenner police. Devaris Lewis, 28, called 911 at 3:51 a.m. Wednesday to report that the victim, a 39-year-old New York man, overdosed, according to Lt. Wayne McInnis, Kenner Police Department spokesman.
Police found the unconscious, naked man lying face-up on a bed at Country Inn and Suites, 1501 Veterans Memorial Blvd., McInnis said. The man survived.

In addition to prostitution, Lewis was booked with possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction of justice. The obstruction charge stems from the allegation that Lewis tried to hide the yellow bag containing the syringe, clothes and towel, McInnis said.

For those of you who dream of cavorting amid Hugh Hefner’s bevy of former strippers at the Playboy Mansion but must settle for a less Entourage-esque existence in New Orleans, here’s something that might interest you. You may have previously thought the closest you could get to those bunnies was through bathroom reading material and your girlfriend’s DVR recordings of Kendra, but now the Playboy mansion comes to you: on Oct. 14, Stonebridge Golf Club in Gretna (the Los Angeles of the Greater New Orleans area) will be transformed into Hefner’s sprawling domicile when it hosts Playboy Golf, which combines the networking sport with — you guessed it — sexy ladies! (Insert really creepy double entendres using golf terms here.)

Gulf Coast M3 gasoline differentials climbed 2.75 cents per gallon to 0.75 cent under the November RBOB contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange by midday EDT Tuesday (1600 GMT). Traders said the boost was due to news of the shutdown as well as the fuel’s latest five-day lifting cycle scheduling to move on the Colonial Pipeline.
Space on the Colonial, which transports refined products to the U.S. Northeast from the Gulf Coast, is limited because of allocations.
A spokeswoman for Royal Dutch Shell, which operates the refinery as part of a 50/50 venture with Saudi Aramco, declined comment on the plant’s operations.
The filing said there were emissions from the overhead of a distillation column due to a leak on the reactor stripper overhead line while performing the shutdown. Ganymede continues the story of Andan Cly, who we first met in Priest’s Boneshaker. The outlaw airship captain is trying to go straight, ceasing his drug-running activities and settling down with his own business in the zombie-infested city of Seattle. But in order to make his retirement plan a reality, he has to do one last job, in New Orleans of all places. There he joins forces with his old flame, Josephine Early, the madame of an upscale New Orleans brothel and a redoubtable Union spy. Much like Boneshaker, the narration switches off between the two main characters, giving a broad view of the world of Priest’s alernate-history steampunk Civil War.

But the real stand-out characters are Josephine Early and the ladies of her brothel. Anyone who has read a Cherie Priest novel knows the author has a penchant for creating interesting, strong, capable women characters. Early and her subordinants (all spies posing as courtesans) are no different. You’ll get no fainting violets or damsels in distress inGanymede. Instead, you get a shrewd, pistol-packing mulatto woman who would rather die than live under a government that legalizes slavery. Josephine Early kicks ass, while still maintaining her nurturing side and feminine allure.

Crime is an omnipresent concern in New Orleans, particularly murder.  When I first moved back to the city prior to entering law school, my landlord treated me to the story of how one of her neighbors was shot while he was walking about, minding his own business, in the driveway next door.
Although that shooting had occurred in the 1970’s, it was still unnerving.  I was renting an apartment in the Garden District less than a block off of St. Charles.  I didn’t think shootings occurred on my block.
A couple of years after I moved in, I began to notice strange men late at night smoking on the balcony of the house across the street.  I didn’t think much of it until I came home one day to find the block swarming with police.  It turned out that a former Loyola law student who was renting the apartment had been running a drug and prostitution ring.  The men smoking on the balcony were apparently “Johns.”

The square is also home to Cafe Du Monde, famous for its cafe au lait and beignets, a great vantage point for people watching or viewing street vendors selling art and jewelry. Walk in any direction off the square and you’ll encounter fashion boutiques, art, antiques and jewelry shops galore. Stop to watch street performers sing, dance, mime or exhibit an assortment of other skills such as puppetry and balancing acts.
If it’s not too hot in the evening, wait in line with others to shuffle into Preservation Hall and hear the local jazz band performing. It’s typically a standing-room-only crowd for these accomplished musicians, who sell their CDs and pass the hat for donations.
Walk along Bourbon Street to experience the city’s seedier side, where half-clad strippers stand in doorways to entice customers inside and employees hawk 3-for-1 drink specials at the numerous watering holes.
