Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said Kylan Laurent, suspected of attacking prostitutes at three motels, had an identification card for one who was murdered Aug. 10 in Metairie and the phone of another who was assaulted eight days later in Harvey. Normand’s assertion came at a news conference this afternoon.
Jateese Hudgins, 21, was strangled at a La Quinta Inn in Metairie. Another woman, 22, who told police she worked as a dancer, was choked unconscious Aug. 18 at the Sun Suites Inn in Harvey.
Normand said authorities found Hudgins’ ID and the Harvey victim’s phone while searching Laurent’s 2005 Chevrolet Impala and his home.
Laurent, a 22-year-old Vacherie resident, had abandoned the car on the Veterans Memorial Bridge after a high-speed chase with State Police on Tuesday. He jumped 165 feet into the Mississippi River and has yet to be found, despite a search using boats and helicopters.

Kylan Laurent found a prostitute online and made an appointment to meet at her Kenner motel room. But he didn’t want sex, police say.
Kenner police say they think this man, shown hiding his face in a surveillance camera image outside a room at the Comfort Suites motel, is Kylan Laurent, whom they accuse of killing Anita McDonald at the motel Monday night.
Instead, they say, Laurent drove to Comfort Suites on Monday afternoon to kill Anita McDonald, 22.
He bound her wrists, likely with zip ties, and strangled her with his hands, then he cleaned her up, removed the bindings and placed her in the sleeping position on the bed, police said.

Police said McDonald’s family knew about her lifestyle. She visited different parts of the country, including California, Florida and Nevada, staying in motels and advertising herself as a prostitute.

Hudgins and McDonald were both prostitutes, police said, and the woman in the Harvey case described herself as a “dancer.”

Police believe Laurent went to the hotel room with the express intention of killing McDonald.
“This was something that was planned,” said Police Chief Steve Caraway.
There was no evidence that the two had sex, said Kenner Detective David Stromeyer, the investigating detective.
Laurent is also a “person of interest” in the Aug. 10 murder of Jateese Hudgins in a Metairie motel and an assault of a woman in a Harvey motel on Aug. 18.
Hudgins and McDonald were both prostitutes, police said, and the woman in the Harvey case described herself as a “dancer.”
McDonald arrived at Comfort Suites in Kenner on Sunday night and posted an advertisement on the website backpage.com that night to basically let people know she was available for prostitution, said Police Chief Steve Caraway. Laurent contacted her that same night.

… In the search of the vehicle we located the Kenner victim’s cell phone, driver’s license and credit cards,”  Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said.  “We actually obtained an arrest warrant for him out of an abundance of caution, obviously in the event that he survived the jump from the bridge.”
He says if Keylan M. Laurent didn’t die, he will face charges for first degree murder and robbery in Kenner.
Sources tell WWL First News that detectives also found evidence of other crimes. They intend to share their findings with other agencies to see if they can link the man to killings in other jurisdictions and determine if they may be dealing with a serial killer.
State Trooper Melissa Matey says, “There are multi agencies that are involved in this investigation and it is ongoing at this time.”
Investigators say both of the victims killed along Veterans Blvd. had a history of prostitution.

Laurent left his car on the Veterans Memorial Bridge about 1 p.m. Tuesday after a high-speed chase with State Police and plunged 165 feet into the Mississippi River, 45 miles upriver from Kenner. Authorities were using a helicopter and boats to hunt for him.
“The search continues – no change,” said Trooper Russell Graham, spokesman for State Police Troop A. As time goes on, authorities search farther downriver but continue looking in the vicinity of the bridge. “The search parameter is widening each day.”
In addition to being a suspect in McDonald’s murder, Laurent is also a “person of interest” in two Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Offices cases: the Aug. 10 strangulation death of Jateese Hudgins, who was found dead in her room at the LaQuinta Inn in Metairie, 5900 Veterans Memorial Blvd. and the Aug. 18 assault of a 22-year-old Ohio woman who was staying at a Harvey motel.
McDonald and Hudgins were both described as prostitutes, and the woman from the Harvey case said she was a “dancer.”

When a man she arranged to meet arrived at her room, he choked her until she lost consciousness, the report said. He tied her hands behind her back with black electrical tape and used the tape to wrap a pillow over her face.
When the woman regained consciousness and freed herself, she noticed that her computer, cash and three phones had been stolen, the report said.
She refused medical treatment when police arrived, but the responding officer noted redness on her neck and ligature marks and swelling on her wrists, according to the report.
The case bore similarities to the deaths of McDonald, a 22-year-old woman from Flowood, Miss., and Hudgins, a 21-year-old woman from Philadelphia. Both had prostitution records, and both their bodies showed evidence that their hands had been bound before they were discovered, McDonald on Monday night at Comfort Inn, 2710 Idaho Ave., and Hudgins on Aug. 10 at La Quinta Inn, 5900 Veterans Memorial Blvd.

METAIRIE, La. – You drive down Airline Highway through Metairie, a once notorious red light district and many of the so called no-tell motels where prostitution flourished for years have either shut down or have been closed by the parish for code violations.
In the meantime, prostitution activity appears to be moving to Veterans Boulevard and much of the business is now web-based.
“Back in the day in the early 90s when I came on, you had the street walkers,” said a Kenner vice detective who did not want to be identified. “Well, you don’t see many street walkers anymore because everything is technology based.”
The detective showed us a popular website where many of the call girls working the local hotels place their ads.

“A lot of these women are freelance. They don’t have what they call pimps or escorts.”

KENNER—
Tracking prostitutes takes on a whole new meaning at the Kenner Police Department. WGNO’s Vanessa Bolano says the women are using technology to reach clients, giving police a new tool to fight the crime.
Tyra Lee says she’s never solicited sex, but has friends who do it the old fashioned way.[”They jump in and out of different cars and stuff.”
Yet undercover Kenner officers say streetwalkers are a dying breed. “Prostitutes have always put themselves in harm’s way, even when they were streetwalkers; they just kind of realigned everything to where it’s done by way of the internet.”
Websites like backpage.com allow prostitutes to market themselves, uploading pictures, describing services, and posting rates.
“They don’t have pimps or escorts. They work alone the majority of them.”
Working alone may rake in more money, but can also allow those with bad intentions to make their move and go unnoticed for

… There were some other incidences in other parts of the state and by working with the other agencies he became a person of interest for us as well,” Caraway said.
Laurent is “a person of interest” in the strangulation of Anita McDonald, 22, of Flowood, Miss. Her partially-clad body was found Monday in a bed inside a room at a Kenner motel, Caraway said.
He is also a “person of interest” in the death of Jateese Hudgins, 21, of Philadelphia, whose body was found at another motel not far from where McDonald was found. Hudgins was found lying on the floor — also partially clothed — with her hands tied behind her back.
According to authorities, Hudgins was a known prostitute and McDonald has a prostitution arrest on her record, but police were unsure why she was in the area.
