New Orleans police arrest one of their own in prostitution sting operation

New Orleans police nabbed one of their own in a recent prostitution sting operation.
Officer Marc Galbreth initially sensed something was amiss when he allegedly tried to buy sex from an undercover policewoman participating in the sting that took place between June 14 and 22, Superintendent Ronal Sepas announced at a news conference Thursday.

Galbreth was booked Thursday with solicitation for prostitution, police said. He was among 48 people who approached female undercover officers, police said. Thirty  were arrested; the others did not offer money for sex.

The sting reflects an approach by Serpas to have officers target prostitutes and their customers equally.
Earlier this month, Serpas announced the department would seek to rid neighborhoods of drug dealers and prostitutes. Although the prostitution sting was prompted by neighborhood complaints, the police department has made clear its intention to substantially increase vice arrests.

Laws keep this kind of thing going long after common sense should have thrown it to the wayside of history. College football operates as a sport attached to non-profit institutions–bowl games, universities–whose day-to-day lives are a matter of profits and losses. Bowl games pay no taxes. Legislators’ action through inaction keeps antitrust investigations into the BCS from ever getting out off the meeting room table. An entire organization exists to codify the system and give it the appearance of propriety in the NCAA, and for its troubles it gets to sell a billion-dollar basketball tournament and sell it under the guise of being a non-profit.
Like a lot of things in the desert, the Fiesta Bowl itself has proven hard to kill. It will keep its slot in the BCS rotation despite a report detailing widespread corruption in its administration: sloppy accounting, bowl money going to employees’ personal use, and business meetings conducted with cronies at local strip clubs. The game’s current home is a perfect vessel f …

New Orleans police arrest 29 men in undercover prostitution sting

Prostitution is a crime of addiction and violence,” Serpas said.
During future stings, Serpas and Harrison said, officers will target prostitutes and their customers equally.
Earlier this month, the NOPD announced a plan to fan out into neighborhoods to bust drug dealers and prostitutes. That action was prompted by neighborhood complaints, but also reflects the agency’s intention, stated in NOPD documents, to substantially increase vice arrests. The first operations resulted in 51 arrests for drug and prostitution violations.

Though the commission has pushed the NOPD to focus more of its attention on violent felonies, Goyeneche said police still have to respond to “victimless” crimes such as drug possession or prostitution. The trick to is make sure resources aren’t diverted from solving violent crimes.

Freecycling. Urban foraging. Freeganism. Dumpster diving. Scavenging. If the ever-increasing number of synonyms for a simple activity (retrieving and reusing items someone else has tossed out) is any indication, the trend is gaining traction.
“I have never lived in a city with such good trash,” says Bywater resident Elizabeth Underwood, who directs the annual sustainable fashion show Worn Again NOLA. “Once I started looking at trash bins as a potential resource, I started seeing material everywhere. Just open your eyes and you’ll be amazed at what you find out there.”
Many websites exist to facilitate the free exchange of goods. The Freecycle Network (www.freecycle.org) has a chapter in New Orleans, and Craigslist.org features an entire section devoted to free stuff. Among the postings: A vegetarian who wants to get rid of MREs containing beef entrees and a retired stripper who no longer needs 40-plus bikini outfits.

But there’s another, non-predatory group that Louisiana has also required to register: prostitutes. Not all of them, mind you; just those caught more than once peddling oral sex. Because their offense has been deemed “unnatural,” their punishment and humiliation have historically been more severe. Their counterparts who sell their bodies missionary-style have been treated less harshly.
The Louisiana Legislature addressed that disparity during its recently concluded session when it passed Rep. Charmaine Marchand Stiaes’ House Bill 141 that treats prostitution as prostitution and removes the requirement that those who commit so-called “crimes against nature” be registered as sex offenders for 15 years.

That’s an important point to make. When we hear the phrase “registered sex offender,” we think of monsters who fondle little children and photograph their naked bodies. There’s a reason that phrase doesn’t make us think of street-corner prostitutes peddling oral sex. They shouldn’t be on such a registry.

New Orleans’ narcotics and vice police units conducted a prostitution sting in Mid-City this month, and arrested nine people over two separate occasions .
The New Orleans Police Department arrested four people (although “officers encountered seven individuals”) at the Rose Motel, in the 3500 block of Tulane Avenue, June 15 for soliciting an undercover officer for crimes against nature. They also arrested five people (after “encountering” five) June 21 for the same crime at the same motel, said NOPD 1st District spokeswoman Melody Young.
A bill has gone to Gov. Bobby Jindal for approval or veto that gives crimes against nature the same legal treatment as prostitution, as it applies to having to register as a sex offender, jail sentences and fines.

A federal jury last month convicted tech vendor Mark St. Pierre of paying $860,000 in bribes and kickbacks to Greg Meffert, Nagin’s former technology chief, in exchange for millions of dollars in city work.
Meffert pleaded guilty last fall and was the government’s star witness.
But in his post-Katrina memoir released this week, Nagin glosses over the events leading up to this tawdry chapter.
In fact, Nagin heaps praise on Meffert, calling him “one of my most talented and effective executive team members.”
Later, he writes, the U.S. attorney “unfortunately” brought felony charges against Meffert and his wife “for an alleged bribery scheme.”
During the trial, lurid details emerged about biweekly strip-club visits provided by St. Pierre, whose taxpayer-funded income was essentially controlled by Meffert. Meffert admitted that strippers performed sex acts on him and others who worked in Nagin’s tech office at parties on St. Pierre’s yacht, the Silicon Bayou.

It was a typical Mayor Nagin who once answered my question regarding concerns I had that after his re-election, some supporting Mitch Landrieu said they would be leaving town. To that, Nagin said in front of dozens of cameras he would send them a postcard.
It was the same mayor who on 60 Minutes, called the sacred area a “hole in the ground” which resulted in an angry New York and an upset country still smarting after 9/11.
Yesterday, he was the same person who at a post-Katrina press conference pleaded that reporters stop writing negative reports about the city, that the perception was causing bad national press and that it would reduce the city’s chance to recover. After his admonishment, and moments later, he referred to the New Orleans business community as being the “Superdome of Prostitutes”.

Slidell police are expanding their online investigations with a new focus on predators who seek to victimize children.
The program was announced Tuesday along with the arrests of two men accused of seeking out Slidell children using tools such as social networking sites, email and chat rooms.
Officers arrested Tyler Lasseigne, 20, of Breaux Bridge and Mitchell Scoggin, 44, of Carencro on Monday. Both are accused of soliciting sex with juveniles as well as sending pornographic images or engaging in lewd activities during webcam chats with juveniles.
Police also have obtained an arrest warrant for a third man, Richard Rutledge, 45, of Gautier, Miss.
The men were targeting children who were 14 years old or younger, Detective Daniel Seuzeneau said. None is accused of having physical contact with a juvenile or sending pornographic images that featured juveniles.
