Feds reduce charges against ACORN pimp James O’Keefe
Four who were arrested after entering office of Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., now facing misdemeanor charges
AP/Salon Salon composite of James O’keefe behind bars, taken from a booking photo provided by the U.S. Dept. of Justice. James O’Keefe and the three other men arrested with him after they tried one of the video stunts O’Keefe has become famous for at the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., were hit with federal felony charges after their arrest. Now, the charges have been reduced, down to a single misdemeanor each. The four men initially faced penalties of up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Now, the maximum punishment they can receive is six months in prison and a $5,000 fine. As the Associated Press notes, the way these charges were reduced seems to indicate that a plea deal is on its way, and a lawyer for one of the men essentially confirmed that to the AP. A bunch of hotels on Airline Drive in Metairie are in trouble with the law after a sting operation that included cops posing as pimps and prostitutes.
Sheriff Newell Normand today announced the big undercover operation to go after illegal activity along the notoriously seedy stretch of road in Jefferson Parish.
“We certainly need to punish property owners that are letting their premises for illegal activities,” Normand said.  “It’s something that maybe we’ve been remiss in really going after them for many, many years.”
Normand says they sited nine hotels or motels:

“We worked out a strategy as to how we would go in utilizing undercover agents posing as pimps and prostitutes,” Normand explained.  “We had the pimp working, the prostitute in the room and we had undercover agents acting as johns coming in.”

… They kept meticulous records. They had the set they paid taxes on, and they had the set that they didn’t,” said Normand. He confirmed the Patels owe the Parish about $535,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest. “Basically, what these people were doing was stealing from the public.”
The latest investigation stems from an earlier probe by undercover detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Vice Squad. Normand said detectives posed as a pimps and prostitutes and tried to rent rooms at motels as part of a larger effort to target the parish’s “problem properties.”
On Aug. 18 and Sept. 22, the detectives visited La Village and made it clear the rooms would be for the working girls. A clerk working the desk rented the “pimp” a room for two hours and even suggested they wait until 10:30 so none of the guests would complain, according to Sheriff’s Office incident reports.
