Acorn Foe Stirs Shock’
By Bill Sanderson
The conservative activist who played “ho” to James O’Keefe’s “pimp” last year in a hidden-camera expose of activist group ACORN expressed “shock” yesterday over O’Keefe’s arrest for trespassing in a US senator’s office.
“I’m well aware that following the law is an integral part of being a good investigative journalist. I take that responsibility and accountability very seriously,” said Hannah Giles, who posed as a hooker to help O’Keefe videotape ACORN workers offering advice on running a prostitution ring.
She said she hoped reports of O’Keefe’s arrest were “untrue.”
O’Keefe, 25, and three other men are charged with entering federal property under false pretenses with intent to commit a felony for appearing in the New Orleans office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) posing as telephone repair workers.

Wetmore declined to discuss their stay at his house and what they did while there. But he praised O’Keefe’s work targeting ACORN on his website and said he hired O’Keefe in 2006, helping him hone his undercover camera craft.
In an Oct. 16 blog post, Wetmore criticized the Leadership Institute, where he no longer works, for not supporting O’Keefe’s budding activism. Wetmore said he was “nearly fired for buying the initial video equipment that James used.”
O’Keefe last year became famous for his videos about ACORN, the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now, which has affiliates that register voters in urban and other poor areas of the country. He used a hidden camera to record as he brought a young woman posing as a prostitute to the group’s offices.

BUZZFLASH GUEST COMMENTARY The man who dressed as a pimp and was responsible for a series of surreptitious videos ‘exposing’ ACORN may wind up in the company of real pimps if he is convicted and serves time for being part of a plot to tamper with the phones in the office of Senator Mary Landrieu.  By Bill Berkowitz  On his way into the offices of ACORN (the Association of Community Organization for Reform Now), dressed in a pimped-out outfit circa the 1970s — fur jacket, cane, and fedora hat — James O’Keefe looked confident and ready to deal. And deal he did. “O’Keefe exploded onto the right-wing media scene in the fall of 2009 with a series of videos that prompted calls for congressional investigations into ACORN, including one video showing employees of the community organizing group advising O’Keefe and young woman, who were posing as a pimp and prostitute, on effective strategies in breaking the law,” Politico’s Andy Barr recently pointed out.

superking January 28, 2010 8:12 PM    in reply to morgan warstler O’Keefe did not have on a pimp outfit in the ACORN offices. My mistake. Transcripts show that O’Keefe posed as his ‘prostitute’s’ boyfriend, asking Acorn employees for help protecting her from her pimp. He then edited the video to make it appear as if he were posing as the pimp. My bad. It wasn’t edited heavily… the only thing added was the pimp outfit. That may have been the only thing “added,” but there was a hell of a lot subtracted, including Acorn employees bullshitting with someone they clearly considered a practical joker, kicking O’Keefe out of their offices, and even calling the police. This whole episode is an embarassment for everyone involved, from idiot propagandists, morons who eat up the faked story even after it’s proven to be fake, and yes, Democrats and Repubs in Congress who illegally voted to defund ACORN based on a hoax. Four Men Arrested for Tampering With Politician’s Phone
By John Danz Jr
Four men were arrested for trying to tamper with a Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu’s phone on Tuesday.
All four men were in their mid 20’s, one of whom made a name for himself to Conservatives last year. James O’Keefe is known for playing pranks and being ostentatious to get a rise out of Liberals. Last year, he posed as a pimp and secretly videotaped a meeting with ACORN, asking for advice on how to run a brothel. His videos have been praised by Conservatives, and see his investigative journalism as “going where others fear to tread.”
Also arrested following in the footsteps of their journalist-in-training were Joseph Basel, Robert Flanagan and Stan Dai, all 24 years of age according to federal officials.

In his cape-wearing turn as a pimp in his undercover ACORN sting, James O’Keefe had cast himself as a new kind of conservative crusader, using the Internet bullhorn to tear down what he saw as liberal prejudices.

But Mr. O’Keefe’s arrest for allegedly trying to tamper with the phones of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) of Louisiana Monday will have consequences, not only for O’Keefe but also for the new brand of conservative muckraking he sought to pioneer.
That movement has taken a hit, and the incident may chill future investigative efforts against liberal targets, some conservative journalists say.
Indeed, many conservatives who had lauded O’Keefe’s work on the ACORN story – in which he showed that some workers of the left-leaning community organizing group were willing to help prostitutes avoid taxes – distanced themselves from the video-producer.

The alleged crimes committed by
ACORN employees in the O’Keefe and Giles videos were excused, and even
rationalized, by the Left.  But they don’t apply the same level of patience and
understanding for O’Keefe and Company.  Even
worse, they’re jumping to conclusions about their guilt, and the nature of their
alleged crime.
OK, so jumping to conclusions about
guilt is a bad, bad thing to do. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at what BigGovernment.com
contributor Kyle Olson wrote
in December about the report issued by former Massachusetts attorney general
Scott Harshbarger, which found no evidence that the ACORN employees involved in the O’Keefe
video sting had acted illegally:
One of Harshbarger’s most startling
conclusions was that ACORN Housing Corp. employees committed no crimes when they
were caught on video repeatedly giving advice to a couple posing as a pimp and
prostitute. He even suggests that the
employees may have been represented in a false light, and were not as guilty as
they appeared on video.

James O’Keefe, the filmmaker, and three other men in their mid-20s, were arrested Monday for allegedly attempting to tamper with Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-La.) phones by pretending to be telephone repairmen. The four men each face up to 10 years in prison — and a $250,000 fine — for allegedly entering federal property under false pretenses.
“That’s real stupid and wrong and just not right — I mean it’s as simple as that,” Johanns said.
O’Keefe gained fame last year after producing films on the liberal group ACORN in which some employees seemed to provide advice to two people pretending to be sex workers to circumvent the law. That generated momentum behind Johanns’s efforts in Congress to kill funding for the group.
But now Johanns said O’Keefe has been damaged.
“Of course his credibility will be tarnished if, in fact, this is what happened. You know what? It should be,” Johanns said. “Just like the employees who engaged in this discussion about prostitution, etc., etc. — of course that destroys your credibility. And you know what? It should.”

… Journalist’ O’KeefeMemo to the “liberal media” and their critics: Even ex-Seattle journalist Michelle Malkin – myopic conservative commentator but a once-trenchant writer for the Times – has to wonder about that strange semi-break-in at Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office down in N’lans. Too early to know what’s behind this poor man’s Watergate burglary, led by so-called journalist James O’Keefe, she says. “But for now,” she blogs, “let it be a lesson to aspiring young conservatives interested in investigative journalism: Know your limits. Know the law. Don’t get carried away.”
O’Keefe’s a conservative Michael Moore wannabe whose prostitute-posing filmwork led to government funding cuts for Acorn. The alleged phony entry to Landrieu’s office appears now to have been a plan to cut off her communication lines rather than tap them. As O’Keefe himself Twittered last night – possibly in violation of a court gag order: “Govt official concedes no attempt to wiretap.”
