Gueringer remembers the route that most of the buses took. “They rode down Claiborne Avenue from downtown, over the bridge and maybe took a quick turn down Caffin (Avenue) before going on to St. Bernard Parish and New Orleans East,” she said.
Afterward, officials would mention the Lower 9th Ward in speeches and pledge that, with their help, it would recover.
But now it seems to many that the only progress being made in the neighborhood is in the cluster of modern homes built by Brad Pitt’s Make It Right project, said the ACORN members.
ACORN has been under assault at the state and federal levels in recent days because of a series of scandals involving allegations of embezzlement, voter registration fraud, failure to pay wage taxes and embarrassing undercover videos of employees advising a fake pimp and prostitute on how to run a brothel.

Don’t mention the iguanas…
BY James White Oct 9th 2009 9:09AMFILED UNDER: Movie news
A fresh trailer for Werner Herzog’s crazed Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans has rolled in, and you can watch it below.
The film stars Nic Cage at his nutso best as Detective Terrance McDonagh, back on active duty despite terrible back pain.
But that’s all right the rogue cop can just score the drugs he needs to help him through the day, even if it does mean seeing the occasional imaginary iguana.
There more trouble for Terrence, though – he owes his girlfriend’s pimp lots of cash and his latest case is more dangerous than usual.
Take a look at the trailer and let us know what you think. Does this new promo make you more likely to see the movie?

As the nonprofit strives to survive the worst scandal in its 39-year history _ videotapes of staffers counseling a faux pimp and prostitute how to run a brothel _ the organization is doing what it does best: mobilizing low-income people. In this case, the goal is to restore the organization’s credibility.
The mobilization effort is unfolding on several fronts. People like Rodriguez are being asked to speak up about how ACORN saved them. She and her husband also agreed to work a phone bank and bring five new people to the next community meeting. And ACORN officials say people are donating more money as they rally to the organization’s defense.

But it’s far from business as usual in the office where two colleagues were fired for their infamous roles advising the impostor pimp and prostitute about evading taxes and laundering her earnings.

On Felicity Street, between Baronne and Carondelet streets, Raymond “Moose” Jackson talks about a frightening encounter with a pack of wild dogs.
At the corner of Felicity and Carondelet, Jeffrey Cook talks about a treehouse he built on an empty lot when he was a kid and the neighborhood bullies he had to contend with — sometimes with his fists — who tried to take it over.
At the corner of Oretha Castle Haley and Euterpe Street, Clark Richardson talks about learning how to walk on stilts at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center to overcome his fear of heights.
And at Oretha Castle Haley and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a 15-year-old Saddi Khali encountered a transvestite prostitute back in the 1980s, and he remembers the click-click-click of his/her heels as he/she chased him up the sidewalk, calling him “Red” because his skin was so light.

Panel OKs funds for ULL fallen wall
A state panel agreed Friday to spend $310,000 to repair a collapsed wall on the University of Louisiana-Lafayette’s football stadium.
“This is a very high safety risk,” Jerry Jones with the Division of Administration told the state Interim Emergency Board.
State Rep. Jim Fannin, D-Jonesboro, questioned why the state should pay for the repairs.
He asked whether universities keep funds on hands for such problems.
“I realize they don’t want emergencies, but they happen,” Fannin said.
Jones said the university lacks the money to fix the stadium wall.
He said the area is being cordoned off until it can be repaired.

Here’s a film that’s been flying under my radar: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Directed by the famed Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn), who most recently voiced a plastic bag for a film short, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is a remake/update (of sorts) of 1992’s Bad Lieutenant starring Harvey Keitel.
While it’s true that the posters for the new film have been pretty, err, boring, the trailer that’s just been released is all kinds of crazy, and has succeeded in getting me excited for the film. You can watch it below, or head over to Yahoo for the HD version.
In this version of the film, we see Nic Cage as Terrence McDonagh, a lieutenant with a back problem who goes from bad to worse as he becomes involved with drugs, theft, and sexual bribery. Eva Mendes shows up as a prostitute named Frankie who also serves as Terrence’s love interest.

We’ve all heard quite a bit about Nicolas Cage and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, and now First Look has given us our very own first look at the film with the first official trailer.
Bad Lieutenant Trailer
In Werner Herzog’s new film Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs — while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.
