A vacationing contractor from Connecticut paused from framing out porches to give our little team a chop saw tip: “It’s not really for chopping. You’re supposed to go slowly with it. It’s safer and makes a cleaner cut.” Two college kids from Kentucky got involved in cutting and nailing a two-by-four across the middle of the porch roof. A group of Canadians painted indoor walls while a busload of Ohio Lutherans in orange shirts rolled Sheetrock-laden wheelbarrows. When we found our soffit buckling, a local professional contractor explained how to cut it so it fits into the F-channel.
As the day wore on, I was continually buoyed up by gratitude for the many volunteers: We haven’t been forgotten. In a pleasant contrast to our bars, strip clubs and gambling halls, New Orleans has become a faith destination for some, a feel-good hobby for others. Some musicians who’d already completed their hours worked among us, but most volunteers don’t live here and aren’t musicians.

… We had already made that decision to not deliver those services,” ACORN chief executive Bertha Lewis said. ACORN officials provided reporters with a letter to the IRS, dated Monday, saying the group was suspending all tax services for 2009.
IRS spokesman Terry Lemons had a different take: “We announced last week we were conducting a thorough review and today we terminated the relationship. We stand by our statement that we terminated the relationship.”
ACORN, which is short for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has long been a target of conservative activists. A hidden-camera video surfaced earlier this month showing ACORN employees in Brooklyn, N.Y., advising a couple posing as a prostitute and pimp to lie to get housing aid. The video, produced by a conservative activist, shows employees in other cities counseling the pair on tax, banking and immigration issues.

Acorn Sues Over Video as I.R.S. Severs Ties
Published: September 23, 2009
A community organizing group stepped up efforts to defend its tainted reputation on Wednesday, filing a lawsuit in Maryland against a conservative activist, as yet another government agency sought to distance itself from the group.
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or Acorn, has faced a deluge of criticism after a series of videos from hidden cameras caught staff members giving advice about tax evasion, human smuggling and child prostitution to James E. O’Keefe III and a partner, who were wearing disguises. Acorn announced it would sue Mr. O’Keefe and others involved in the video on Thursday in Maryland District Court, charging that he recorded the staff members without their consent, which is illegal.
Alan Z. Schwartz, general counsel for Acorn, accused Mr. O’Keefe of “trying to destroy an organization whose principal purpose is to help poor people.” Mr. Schwartz said the group was not only seeking monetary damages, but als …

ACORN has a lot of work to do if it wants to restore its image, regain credibility and continue receiving public funding in the wake of the latest public scandal that has tarnished the liberal-leaning advocacy group.
ACORN short for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now has received $54 million in federal funds since 1994. But the funding is in jeopardy after a highly publicized and damaging video surfaced.
Hidden cameras captured ACORN workers assisting a pair of conservative filmmakers posing as a pimp and prostitute on how to obtain fraudulent loans to operate a brothel, evade taxes and smuggle underage illegal immigrants from El Salvador to engage in prostitution.

WASHINGTON — The IRS severed ties with ACORN on Wednesday, joining a growing list of government agencies to end relationships with the community activist group.
The Internal Revenue Service said it would no longer include ACORN in its volunteer tax assistance program. The program offered free tax advice to about 3 million low- and moderate-income tax filers this spring. ACORN provided help on about 25,000 returns, the IRS said.
ACORN, meanwhile, said it had already suspended its tax program.

ACORN has been contacted by the FBI and the Brooklyn district attorney’s office in connection to the recent scandal in which staffers were caught on video advising two people posing as a pimp and a prostitute on how to break the law.
The news was revealed by Arthur Schwartz, ACORN’s general counsel, on a conference call with reporters moments ago. (Full disclosure: Almost a decade ago, I was hired by Schwartz to work on a political campaign.) Schwartz said that the requests for information were not subpoenas, but confirmed that they were part of investigations into possible criminal activity revealed by the videos. He added that ACORN is cooperating with those requests.
In the wake of the videos being released, several Republican lawmakers have called for a Justice Department probe of the group. And President Obama also said he thought ACORN should be investigated, though he didn’t specify by who.

Intensely Creepy Things…
…you didn’t even know about.
Publius at Big Government reports the breaking news that the Internal Revenue Service is cutting its ties with…ACORN.
Now the Associated (with terrorists) Press reports that the IRS will no longer use ACORN as a volunteer organization offering free tax advice to low and moderate income folks. Apparently, they’ll get a different group to handle the pimp and whore market.
It’s simply astounding in how many places this corrupt organization has managed to insert its tentacles. Next we’ll probably hear that ACORN is no longer a part of the Pentagon’s volunteer civil defense plans.

By now, Congress has de-funded ACORN. The scandals with ACORN representatives approving the âœpimpâ and âœprostituteâ (although ACORN has promised its own internal review) have been all over TV. For many casual viewers and readers, ACORN might indeed be consigned to the âœdustbin of history.â
But before we do so, letâs look at what ACORN is â and why people are attacking it.

In Brooklyn, the organization sponsors ACORN Community High School, which receives fairly high ratings. Even in the recent undercover investigations, by a highly suspect group, the âœpimpâ and âœprostituteâ apparently went to several other ACORN offices and were shown the door before they finally hit upon some staff members who were willing to take them up on their offer. And Iâm still not sure whether the audio was somehow âœenhancedâ to make it look even more incriminating.

Some people will argue in defense of ACORN that some of its personnel were “set up” by imposters, as in the letter that appeared in The Sun “No justice in ACORN reaction” (Readers respond, Sept. 18). I call the two “imposters” resiliant investigative reporters. Imagine what ACORN has gotten away with before these two came along. Fourteen states are in the process right now of investigating ACORN for voter registration fraud. Who knows what other skeletons are in their closet.
ACORN employees around the country either represent the organization with honesty and integrity or with lying, cheating, fraud and potential illegal activity. The employees in the videos welcomed the supposed pimp and prostitute and their over-the-top story with open arms. I believe that corruption in ACORN goes a lot higher than some people in a local branch office. ACORN has received $54 million in federal funds since 1994. The U.S. taxpayer has the right to know what is going on.
