This is not to say that Zack didn’t suffer, or that his suffering was not in some way emblematic of other veterans’ experiences. It’s to say that Mr. Brown, who reports this story with a heavy hand, tin ear and salacious eye, doesn’t make it matter.
“Shake the Devil Off” is filled with inarticulate testimony about who Zack was and how he got that way. When his father became a bartender at strip clubs, Zack’s mother says, “I was like, ‘This isn’t how it’s supposed to be.’ ” The crushing disappointment of Zack’s failure to become homecoming king at his California high school in 1995 is duly described.
So is the mating call (“Ya’ll want a shot of Jägermeister?”) with which 18-year-old Zack wooed Lana Shupack, the 28-year-old stripper who would become his wife. Once Zack enlisted in the 709th Military Police Battalion, Lana and her co-workers kept Zack supplied with strip-club photos that did not boost his morale.

Yesterday, hate-radio talk show host Neal Boortz mocked President Obama’s pledge to rebuild New Orleans, calling the victims of Hurricane Katrina human trash. This weekend, President Barack Obama told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that he “remains focused on rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast,” and anything less “would be a betrayal of who we are as a country.” Boortz responded on Twitter by attacking the “debris that Katrina chased out“:
Boortz, who regularly mocks Latinos, women and the poor — even calling Rep. Cynthia McKinney a “ghetto slut” — made an expansive case that the combined natural and human disaster of Hurricane Katrina actually helped the city of New Orleans on his June 24, 2009 radio show. Although Katrina’s devastation cost this nation $80 billion, killed thousands, and displaced a million people, Boortz believes “Katrina cleansed New Orleans“:
Katrina cleansed New Orleans. It just washed out a lot of debris, including human debris.
Boortz has also called the overwhelmingly black and poor victims of the Katrina disaster in New Orleans “human parasites” and “deadbeats,” even suggesting that a victim of Hurricane Katrina consider prostitution instead of “sucking off taxpayers.”

Kristen Stewart to Strip for James Gandolfini in New Movie
BY: WENN   |   Friday, August 21, 2009
TWILIGHT star Kristen Stewart is set to mix vamps for tramps in a saucy new film, in which she bares almost all. The teen star will play a young lap dancer and prostitute in James Gandolfini’s gritty new film “Welcome to The Rileys.” And, as the promiscuous Mallory, she even offers to service “The Sopranos” star.
Reports suggest Stewart walks around naked in many scenes and was so terrified of stripping on camera she insisted “Twilight” co-star and pal Nikki Reed join her on the set of the film in New Orleans, Louisiana. In a recent interview with About.com, Reed said, “Im going with Kristen to New Orleans… while shes shooting and Im a good support system… I have to go to be with Kristen.”

Goorley said, “Do you think that is the type of evidence you use use when you have not only a man’s fate, but his life in your hands? The state wants to kill Michael Anderson.”
The jury must be unanimous in its verdict.
Goorley reminded the jury that a former prosecutor testified that Williams often asked about financial assistance from the state and federal witness protection program. Williams received money to pay for rent, groceries, clothes and other living expenses. At one point, she relocated to Texas.
“She wants her thirty pieces of silver,” Goorley said.
Goorley also mocked Williams as “a professional street-walker,” when he questioned how she could have walked from her St. Charles Avenue hotel to the corner of Josephine and Danneel streets in time to witness the massacre.
Williams’ former boyfriend, Raymond Cobbins, called her a “prostitute” on the witness stand, and he testified that they were in a hotel room all night.

The Louisiana Democratic Party really seems to be enjoying the material they have to work with in the 2010 Senate campaign, considering that the opponent is none other than Republican Sen. David Vitter.
The Louisiana Dems have unveiled a new Web site to go after the incumbent. Keep in mind that Vitter is a champion of the religious right who in 2007 was implicated in the D.C. Madam prostitution scandal and admitted to an unspecified “serious sin.” The Web site is named “Doing A Vitter,” a pretty clear reference to Vitter’s baggage:
Officially, the site defines “Doing a Vitter” as an act of hypocrisy. As a practical consequence, however, this Web site itself tells us that this race is only going to get dirtier and dirtier as the campaign cycle goes on.

… New Orleans is the envy of other cities across the United States for our unparalleled inventory of historic buildings, even after all the losses from Katrina, ” said Sara Orton, chairwoman of the committee that chose the nine sites. “We hope that our list will serve as a reminder of the importance of our historic resources and refresh New Orleanians’ pride in our city.”
The 2008 edition of the list included the Dixie Brewery, St. Francis de Sales Church, Deutsches Haus, several mid-20th century public schools, the former Bohn Ford building and custodians’ cottages at public schools citywide.
The annual list often features humble structures or offbeat but distinctive design features. The 2005 list, for example, included the blue-and-white street name tiles once common in sidewalks throughout older sections of the city, as well as the 200-700 blocks of Bourbon Street, best known for strip clubs and T-shirt shops.

Big Daddy’s was one of many strip clubs on the most infamous street of America’s first sin city. From BestofNewOrleans.com:
In the 1970s, Big Daddy’s was one of many topless go-go joints on a street in transition. Bourbon street’s days as a glittering hub of jazz and burlesque were behind it, and its future as a slick tourist attraction with “gentlemen’s clubs” was years away. “There was not a single T-shirt shop on the street then, if you can believe that,” says Eddie Jones, who played keyboards with the Southside Blues Band in Big Daddy’s courtyard patio between 1976 and 1978. The patio, between Big Daddy’s and Unisex Love Acts next door, has featured female wrestling and male strippers, but in the mid- to late-’70s, it was an extra stage for Big Daddy’s dancers, magicians, contortionists, escape artists, fire-eaters and live bands. History | When the topic is sexual violence in wartime, the horrors of the Balkans and Rwanda typically come to mind — not the American Civil War. But in the academic journal Daedalus, Crystal N. Feimster begs to differ with historians who “have accepted without question the idea that Union soldiers rarely raped southern women, black or white, and have argued that sexual violence was rare during the Civil War.”
In fact, the University of North Carolina historian writes, “hundreds, perhaps thousands of women suffered rape” during the war, with many assaults likely unreported. But her focus is the threat of sexual predation by northern troops, of the kind suggested fictionally in Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind.” Feimster explores an 1862 order by the Union Gen. Benjamin Butler decreeing that any New Orleans woman showing contempt for his occupying troops “shall be regarded and held liable to be treated as a woman of the town plying her avocation” — that is, the city’s outspokenly Confederate belles were to be treated as prostitutes. Feimster sifts evidence that the order was a green light for Union soldiers to threaten sexual violence if not commit rape itself.
