On the other hand, Honoré announced Saturday that he’s moving back to Louisiana from his comfy Georgia ranch. “I’ll be on the streets with you … to once again claim this city as one of the greatest cities in America,” he said in a New Orleans speech marking the fourth anniversary of hurricane Katrina.
“All he’s got to say is ‘stuck on stupid,’ and Vitter is toast,” the BayouBuzz quoted a Republican insider as saying. That phrase, which Honoré directed at a reporter in 2005, became a rallying cry for New Orleanians, emblematic of his “can do” message for whipping into shape a relief effort bogged down in a bureaucratic swamp.
But the general, a Creole who retains a home in Zachary, La., from where he votes, has reasons to be cautious, political analysts say.
Senator Vitter is doing some prodigious fundraising, raising $3 million so far for his reelection bid. That’s despite his apologies for using an escort service in 2007. What’s more, Vitter is a “ferocious campaigner,” sources say.
A group of neighbors spoke against the plan, and dozens submitted statements against the rezoning directly to the planning board or through the Bissonet Civic Association.
“Rezoning this property will only reduce the appearance and property values of this neighborhood,” said George McLean, speaking as a board member of the civic group.
Fran King, who tracks zoning issues for the Bissonet association, said the spread of commercial operations would mar recent work to beautify Kawanee with new sidewalks and trees.
“It would be like a tumbleweed effect; one house would go, then another house would go,” King said after the planning meeting. “It would be David Drive on Kawanee. David Drive is really tacky.”
King said she feared the specter of a tattoo shop, massage parlor or bar opening on the corner.

This is not to say that Zack didn’t suffer, or that his suffering was not in some way emblematic of other veterans’ experiences. It’s to say that Mr. Brown, who reports this story with a heavy hand, tin ear and salacious eye, doesn’t make it matter.
“Shake the Devil Off” is filled with inarticulate testimony about who Zack was and how he got that way. When his father became a bartender at strip clubs, Zack’s mother says, “I was like, ‘This isn’t how it’s supposed to be.’ ” The crushing disappointment of Zack’s failure to become homecoming king at his California high school in 1995 is duly described.
So is the mating call (“Ya’ll want a shot of Jägermeister?”) with which 18-year-old Zack wooed Lana Shupack, the 28-year-old stripper who would become his wife. Once Zack enlisted in the 709th Military Police Battalion, Lana and her co-workers kept Zack supplied with strip-club photos that did not boost his morale.
… I can relate to the people of Louisiana better, ” Melancon said. “Yes I’m a Democrat, but the majority of people in Louisiana are Democrats. They’re conservative Democrats, I’m a conservative Democrat. They’re pro-life, I’m pro-life. They’re pro-gun, I’m pro-gun. I’m an avid hunter and fisherman. My opponent has never owned a (hunting or fishing) license in his life. OK, so we get out there up in north Louisiana, I think I can relate to these folks a whole lot better. When they start talking about calling ducks, I know what they are talking about.”
Melancon’s reference to restoring “honor” goes to Vitter’s chief vulnerability in his bid to win a second term. It was revealed two years ago that Vitter’s telephone number was in the records of the so-called “D.C. Madam, ” who prosecutors said ran a high-dollar escort service. Vitter apologized, saying, “This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Democratic Rep. Charlie Melancon, a self-styled centrist “Blue Dog” Democrat, said Thursday that he will run for Senate next year against incumbent David Vitter, the conservative Republican whose family-values image took a hit in a 2007 prostitution scandal. Melancon’s announcement had been anticipated. Vitter’s campaign has been attacking him in Internet ads and videos as a liberal ally of President Obama. Touting himself as an anti-abortion, pro-gun businessman, Melancon didn’t mention the prostitution scandal in his announcement but said “Louisiana deserves better” than Vitter. “Louisiana needs a different approach. More bipartisan. More disciplined. More honest and with a whole lot more commonsense,” he said. “I welcome Charlie to the race and look forward to an important, spirited debate,” Vitter said in a prepared statement.

La. Rep. Melancon to make U.S. Senate bid
WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (UPI) –
Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-La., Thursday announced his bid for a Senate seat in 2010, emphasizing his conservative positions in the right-leaning state.
Melancon will be seeking the seat held by Republican Sen. David Vitter, The Hill reported.
Vitter came to national attention in 2007 when he admitted his involvement with a prostitute. Democrats have made an issue of Vitter’s actions since then, The Hill said.
“I’m announcing my candidacy for the U.S. Senate to replace David Vitter because Louisiana deserves better,” Melancon said in a video posted on the Internet. “Louisiana needs a different approach. More bipartisan. More disciplined. More honest, and with a whole lot more common sense.”

Earlier today, Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA) said he plans to run for senate. (You can see Melancon’s video announcement, which he emailed to his supporters this morning, after the jump.)
“I’m announcing my candidacy for the U.S. Senate to replace David Vitter because Louisiana deserves better,” Melancon said. “Lousiana needs a different approach. More bi-partisan. More disciplined. More honest and with a whole lot more common sense.”
In 2007, Vitter’s name was found on the phone list of the infamous “D.C. Madam.”
The Times-Picayune says Melancon, the former president of the American Sugar Cane League, describes himself as a “pro-life, pro-gun Southern Democrat.”
According to the newspaper, “family ties are likely be an emphasis for Melancon because of Vitter’s 2007 admission that his phone number had appeared on the list of a Washington, D.C., escort service years earlier and that he had committed a “‘very serious sin.’”

August 27, 2009
Democratic Rep. Charlie Melancon announced today that he will challenge Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, a first-term Republican, in 2010.
“I’m announcing my candidacy for the U.S. Senate to replace David Vitter because Louisiana deserves better. Louisiana needs a different approach,” Melancon said. “More bipartisan. More disciplined. More honest and with a whole lot more common sense.”
Melancon, pronounced meh-LAW-sawn, is the only Democrat in the state’s seven-member House delegation and is a leading member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog caucus. The 61-year-old represents coastal Louisiana and is a former president of the American Sugar League.
In 2007, Vitter acknowledged his involvement with a D.C. escort service and earlier this year was involved in a security flap at Dulles International Airport. He led Melancon 44-32 in a July survey by Public Policy Polling.

New Orleans Escorts: Blue Dog Chairman Launches Campaign A…

Washington, D.C. (AHN) – Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA), a co-chairman of the group of fiscal conservative House Democrats called the Blue Dog Coalition, on Thursday launched his campaign to challenge Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) next year, touting his record as a businessman and casting himself as a “pro-life, pro-gun” centrist “proud family man.” Vitter is one of several Republicans that critics consider vulnerable in 2010 because of his ties to a prostitution ring.
In a video message, Melancon said, “Louisian deserves better. Louisiana needs a different approach, more bipartisan, more discipline, more honest and with a whole lot more of common sense. As a businessman, my background has been demanding accountability, getting results and solving problems. In these tough economic times, we’ve got to be a whole lot smarter. First, we must get government spending and this deficint under control while creating more opportunities for Louisiana by cutting taxes on small businesses and making responsible investments in job training and college opportunity. For me, it’s all about the right prioritie …
